Top 10 New Releases on Blu Ray Blu-ray10.evjoy.com : Jan 19th, 2010 - Welcome! This week: we're getting bounced around like Leno's time slot. Be it space turbulence, rockin' the van, dodging Cuban gunfire, ping-pong carnage or just hitting the highs & lows of being 17, it's a pot-holed ride. Buckle up & scroll... 1. Pandorum ~ Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Norman Reedus (2010) Ever wake up from lengthy hibernation on an empty spaceship with amnesia only to find feral mutants in your shower, again? 2. Boogie Nights ~ Mark Wahlberg, Heather Graham, Burt Reynolds, and Julianne Moore (2010) "Even if the notorious 1970s p*rn-filmmaking milieu doesn't exactly do it for you, Boogie Nights is one of the key films of the last decade, and among the most ambitious & exuberantly alive American movies. Loosely based on the life of John Holmes, at heart it's a classic Hollywood rise-and-fall fable. Cast is one of the great ensembles, including Oscar nominees Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore." --Jim Emerson (322) (Reviews for the DVD version, as the BD is just out.) 3. Magnolia ~ Michael Bowen, Melinda Dillon, Henry Gibson, and Philip Baker Hall (2010) Impossible to explain this 3-headed monster plot-line in such a short space. We tried, hit backspace & finally gave up. 4 stars though - do see the reviews for yourself. 4. Whiteout ~ Kate Beckinsale, Gabriel Macht, Columbus Short, and Tom Skerritt (2010) Think you've got a lot of powder to shovel in the back yard? Try an entire continent. Oh - and bring a gun. 5. Comedy by Ricky + star-studded cameos. Second half isn't as bang-on as the first, but by all accounts still a solid piece of work if you're a fan. 6. Got 261 minutes to spare this weekend? Pull out your tribute t-shirt & watch Steven Soderbergh's film on Che Guevara - a fascinating, in-depth exploration of a man on a mission. 7. Across the Hall ~ Mike Vogel, Brittany Murphy, Danny Pino, and Brad Greenquist (2010) Danny Pino is an insecure, short-fused guy who's convinced his girlfriend (Brittany Murphy) is cheating on him - so convinced he follows her to a funky hotel and books the room across the hall, where he stares through the peephole, armed with a gun and bad intent. It's all good fun from there. Kidding; it's a very tense piece, & fairly well executed. 9. "Many movies explore the difficulties of growing up, but few are as powerful and as moving as According to Greta." --Tami Horiuchi. You've been warned: disturbing scenes. (3) (Reviews are for the DVD version, as the BD is just out.) 10. Music - it' will always move you in the right direction. Guilty Pleasure: Ping Pong Playa ~ Jimmy Tsai, Roger Fan, Shelley Malil, and Alexander Agate Streetwise Christopher "C-Dub" Wang is a swaggering suburban who waxes political on all things Asian American and clings to pro basketball pipe dreams. When trouble strikes the family, C-dub overcomes living at home, working a dead-end job and his bossy older brother to run his Mother's ping pong class and defend the family's athletic dynasty. Incredibly funny stuff from director Jessica Yu. Documentaries Of The Week: 1. Hi Def Music Of The Week: Audio / Video Corner JBL's 'On Stage' Micro Portable Speaker Dock for iPod
